An off the cuff comment from a Police Tac Ops officer at the scene of the double blue Skoda crash on Tuesday got QLocal reporter Roger Blaxall thinking - should locals be concerned about the effectiveness of our local CCTV system especially as a number of cameras are said to be NOT working.
He emailed the borough council comms. team 18 months ago with these questions which were never properly answered...
Original enquiry:
Some facts and figures please:
the no. of cctv cameras in the borough
those that are working effectively
those that are broken - and what is wrong with them
cost of running the system annually and how much it costs to maintain them
no. of staff monitoring them and what procedures you have in place when they malfunction (not the staff, the cameras...)
most common problems
replacement programme for the older cameras re. advances in technology, etc.
RB QLocal Here's the council's response:
'West Lancashire Borough Council operates a large network of CCTV cameras across the Borough which supports the police in their work, aims to act as a deterrent to crime and antisocial behaviour, and is used to gather information and identify suspects when incidents do occur.
Cameras are regularly upgraded as they come to the end of their lifespan with newer technology and higher quality introduced.
CCTV is also monitored by staff 24/7 with information fed to the police so they can react quickly.'
At least one council tax payer's planning to attend an upcoming meeting to ask councillors just how many cameras are 100% working - especially given rumours that poor wi fi means some in the northern parishes (Tarleton, Banks and Hesketh Bank) are faulty along with a number in Skem which are evidently broken.
