Children and families have been given a useful guide to keep them safe on Blackpool’s award-winning beaches this Easter.

Blackpool Council has issued a new Seaside Safety Guide ahead of the school holidays, containing important advice for anyone using the beach, promenade or bathing in the sea.

In addition to producing the new guide, the Council has also installed new signage along the Promenade at all points where people may consider accessing the beach.
It includes details on some of the hazards that people may encounter and uses a blue, yellow and red symbols system to warn of the most serious dangers.

The new guide will available to beach users at information points on the Promenade as well at the Visitor Centre next to North Pier and also online through the Blackpool Council website at www.blackpool.gov.uk/beachsafety

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council said: “We want everybody to come to Blackpool and enjoy our award winning beaches this year.
“Having a swim or a paddle is all part of the fun but people also need to be aware of the risks that our strong currents and high tides can bring.

“Not only can this increase the dangers especially to people once they are in the water, they can be faced faced with other issues such as unpredictable currents, incoming tides and sandbanks.

“The latest guide is specifically aimed at highlighting the dangers to children and families and we hope that with the improved signage now positioned at key access points on the Promenade this will increase awareness of the dangers that exist particularly at this time of year.

“If you are visiting the beach this year, we’d politely ask you to help us look after it by taking your litter home with you, using the many bins available and picking up after your dog.”

Copies of the new Seaside Safety Guide are available by visiting the Blackpool Council website at www.blackpool.gov.uk/beachsafety

Picking up your litter is just one of the things that people can do to help improve bathing water quality on the Fylde coast. To find out the others, visit: www.lovemybeach.org
Dogs are currently allowed on all areas of the beach during March and April. A consultation around areas of the beach where dogs may be excluded in the summer months (May – September) is currently being undertaken. To comment on the consultation go to www.blackpool.gov.uk to have your say.
