The number of households where no one works has fallen by more than 750,000 since 2010 and is now at its lowest level in more than 10 years.

According to new independent figures released today (30 March 2016), there are now 764,000 fewer workless households in this country compared to 5 years ago – a fall of 20%.

The figures also show there are 449,000 fewer children living in workless households.

And the number of households where no one has ever worked is down by 36,000 – a fall of 10% since 2010.

Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb said:

Our economic and welfare reforms are helping to turn around the lives of hundreds of thousands of families up and down the country who were previously overlooked.

Reforms this government has put in place such as Universal Credit, the Claimant Commitment and the benefit cap and are paying off, supporting a record 31 million people in work, with the unemployment rate also at a 10-year low.

There are now nearly half a million fewer children living in households where no one works; where they can see one or both their parents benefitting from the dignity of a job and the security that a pay cheque brings.

Employment figures published earlier this month showed that there are 2.37 million more people in work now compared with 2010 – an average increase of more than 1,000 people in work every single day.

The number of people claiming unemployment related benefits has also fallen to its lowest level since 1975, and there are now around 770,000 vacancies available in the economy at any one time.

The government’s welfare reforms are returning fairness to the benefit system and encouraging people who are able to work to do just that. They include:

the benefit cap, which ensures that families don’t receive more in benefits than the average family earns
Universal Credit, the biggest change to the welfare system in a generation
the Claimant Commitment, which spells out what we expect from jobseekers when they search for work
the New Enterprise Allowance scheme, which helps people on benefits to become their own boss
the Work Programme, which has so far helped more than 503,000 people escape long-term unemployment

Which is mostly incorrect, UC was a complete waste of money

Their has been a Documentary on TV about it's failings IDS hasn't saved the tax payer anything , infact his ineptness has cost them more

Then you have the questionable figures given of unemployed , questionable because they do not include those who cannot claim JSA due to sanctions , or those attending mandatory work programs and then there is all those who are claiming ESA , At best some have found low paid or part time work and are still in receipt of in work benefits
But they will try and feed you lies about the economy recovering , more jobs being created by them, whilst there are companies closing down,or re locating to other countries all the time,
The national debt has increased under this government not reduced

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a6947661.html

So these reforms in the grand scale of things have not provided any real savings ,but they have only caused misery and suffering to millions ,all for nothing

According to the skewed script fewer children are now living in a home where no-one works, yet somehow the number of children living in poverty is soaring, all those on zero hour contracts, many earning very little, but it keeps the numbers off the unemployed register.

The entire shambles has and is costing more and more to the taxpayer, yet those in need receive less and less, how can any-one so completely inept be even permitted to draw his salary? never mind keep his position.

As ever the whole saga is driven by Tory ideology with no concern for the damage and personal harm, the savings are and will continue to cost more and more because the the plans are plain wrong.

They don't count people claiming UC, do they? or a host of other benefits.

What is that saying about 'lies, damned lies and statistics'?

We live in an iniquitous society and, if anyone thinks they will be better off being governed by the other parties, then they are sadly deluded.
Same species of self serving pocket liners just a different coloured rosette.
Remember - politics is just show business for ugly people.

I agree to a point in that they are all in this together , snouts deep in the trough the lot of em, that all they care about themselves, We need a change and need it soon

Labour used to be different a very long time ago, nothing like the last labour government (Aka Tory lite) and now with corbyn , they need to dump the far left wing stance for a kick off or they will have no chance at the next general election

If they are signing on at the JC Then yes they will be counted ,

It's those who have been sanctioned often without good reason, and those who are mandated to attend the work program and similar nonsense (jobs for the boys as in the directors of these private companies contracted by DWP/Gov) lots of money wasted on those but IBS knows everything he does is right

"iniquitous" meaning grossly unfair and morally wrong, so what do you propose then as politics is not an option nor solution what do we do???

That's the way of the world i'm afraid people line their pockets, prey on the weak, take advantage of any situation etc, etc, so what's the answer then?
